Principal Fibre Optic Gyroscope Engineer

Job description

A cutting-edge Australian R&D innovator at the forefront of photonics and inertial navigation is seeking to expand its impact globally. With recent technological breakthroughs and strong backing, this company is creating Australia's first role of its kind in fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) engineering. The growth in demand for high-performance navigation systems across defence, aerospace, and autonomous sectors has driven the need for this pioneering hire.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of Fiber Optic Gyroscope (FOG) systems for optimal performance and manufacturability
  • Develop and scale up FOG manufacturing processes for high-volume production
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate hardware, software, and production efforts
  • Analyse and troubleshoot test data to continuously enhance FOG performance
  • Establish efficient test processes and tooling for fibre optic coils
  • Guide production engineering teams with metrics, SPC implementation, and technical support
  • Stay current with technological advancements in photonics and inertial navigation
  • Maintain a strong focus on customer needs and application performance in demanding environments


Desired Skills and Attributes

  • Bachelor's or Master's in Physics, Optics, Photonics, or Electrical Engineering
  • Proven expertise in Fiber Optic Gyroscopes and their underlying principles (e.g. Sagnac effect)
  • Experience in designing and integrating electro-optical systems
  • Deep knowledge of light sources, optical fibers, modulators, and detectors
  • Familiarity with scaling up precision manufacturing processes
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Proactive, ownership-driven mindset with strong problem-solving ability


Desirable:

  • PhD in a related field
  • Background in defence, aerospace, or autonomous systems
  • Exposure to inertial navigation algorithms and modeling tools
  • Training in root cause analysis (RCA) and 8D methodologies
