The Role

This studio is looking for a Technical Animator to join the team and help further develop the animation pipeline. With a large focus on runtime animation integration and animation handling in the pipeline you will work alongside animators to help develop blend graphs that produce smooth, AAA quality animation, seamlessly combining animated motion with various runtime input sources. Assist in defining animation related workflows and systems and help to define all aspects of animation production. Work with multiple disciplines to identify effective solutions, you will serve as a communicator with the goal of ensuring all involved parties have a common understanding of the system and goals. 

Responsibilities: 
  • Work alongside Animators, Engineers, and designers helping to develop the utensils they use to interact with animation data.
  • Ensure that your role has a positive and proactive effect with regards to communication between the various departments. 
  • Champion for Animation while maintaining attention to performance issues.  
  • Provide ongoing support and training for to Animation throughout the production cycle. 
  • Communicate, promote, and document animation related processes and best practices. 
  • Help to identify tools that will make managing large amounts of animation possible. 
Requirements: 
  • 5+ years experience in the gaming industry. 
  • 3-5 years experience working with runtime animation systems. 
  • Experience working with 2 or more animation pipelines. 
  • Bachelors degree in any art-related discipline.
  • Strong technical skills, understanding of kinematics and a keen eye for animation.
  • Experience with runtime animation tools, techniques, and capabilities (Unity, Havok Behaviour, Natural Motion, or proprietary, etc.)
  • Familiar with rigging and MOCAP workflows. 
  • Experience writing animation in Max, Maya or other. 
  • Understand differences between production and runtime animation requirements and data
  • Clear, demonstrable understanding of animation data and how it moves through the pipeline
  • Self-sufficient, motivated, and independent
  • Strong communication and time management skills
  • Familiarity with common data formats: XML/JSON/etc and common 3D data formats: HVK/GR2/OBJ/FBX/ALEMBIC/etc.
Additional beneficial skills: 
  • Some understanding of shaders
  • Programming experience
  • Pyside/PyQT
  • Perforce
  • Experience with special effects and non-character animation
